Variable angle mitre jig for SCH10S weld elbows

A two-part block that holds a schedule 10 weld elbow so you can cut it to angle and get the same angle every time. The scale runs from 15° to 75° in 15° steps. Set the key, butt the elbow against it and cut at the face of the block.

It is built to weld elbow dimensions. The bend radius comes from the nominal pipe size, not the outside diameter, and the block has more clearance round the pipe than our tube blocks, because weld elbows vary more in diameter than mandrel-bent tube.

Which version do I need?

This block is for SCH10S weld elbows in 1.25", 1.5" and 2" NPS. Pick your pipe size, then the elbow type. A long radius elbow has a centreline radius of 1.5 times the nominal size, and a short radius elbow has a radius equal to the nominal size (the table below gives both in millimetres). If you're not sure which you have, measure from the centre of the curve to the centreline of the pipe.

Weld elbows have the same outside diameter and radius in every schedule, so the block should suit heavier schedules of the same NPS size too. For mandrel bends in OD tube you need one of the tube versions: the 1D mitre jig, the 1.5D / 2D mitre jig, or the V2 mitre jig with a slot every 5°.

How it works

  1. Open the block and lay your elbow in the bottom half.
  2. Push the key into the slot for the angle you want.
  3. Slide the elbow round until its end sits against the key, then drop the top half on. Magnets hold the two halves together.
  4. Mark round the elbow at the end face of the block, or cut flush to the face. The piece between the key and the face is the angle on the scale.
  5. When you're done, the key stores in the block. On the 1.25" and 1.5" short radius blocks it stays in one of the angle slots.

Sizes

NPS size Pipe OD Long radius (CLR) Short radius (CLR)
1.25" 42.2 mm 47.6 mm 31.8 mm
1.5" 48.3 mm 57.2 mm 38.1 mm

The photos show the OD tube version, which is the same design. Yours is marked with its pipe size and elbow type. The 1.25" and 1.5" short radius blocks are solid inside the bend, without the window.
