Mitre jig and X pipe marking block in one, for 1.5D and 2D mandrel bends
One block that does two jobs. It cuts a mandrel bend to angle like our mitre jig, with a scale from 10° to 80° in 10° steps, plus 45°. It also has a flat face across the outside of the bend, with an opening that marks the merge cut for an X pipe.
Trim your two bends to the angle the X needs, then mark the merge on both from the same block, so the two halves match.
Which version do I need?
This listing covers 1.5D and 2D bends. Pick your tube size, then the bend radius. 1.5D means the centreline radius of the bend is 1.5 times the tube's outside diameter, and 2D is twice (the table below gives both in millimetres). For tight 1D bends there is a separate 1D block. If you only need to mark X pipes and not cut to angle, the X pipe marking jig does that for less.
These blocks are sized for OD tube: mandrel bends sold by their outside diameter. They don't suit SCH10S weld elbows, which are made to a different bend radius.
Cutting a bend to angle
- Open the block and lay your bend in the bottom half.
- Push the key into the slot for the angle you want.
- Slide the bend round until its end sits against the key, then drop the top half on. Magnets hold the two halves together.
- Mark round the bend at the end face of the block, or cut flush to the face. The piece between the key and the face is the angle on the scale.
- When you're done, the key stores in the block.
Marking an X pipe
- Close the block round your bend. You don't need the key for this.
- The outside of the bend shows through the opening in the flat face. Scribe round the edge of the opening.
- Take the bend out and cut to the line. The cut is a flat one sixth of the tube diameter deep.
- Mark and cut the second bend the same way. The two flats sit face to face, which gives the usual one third overlap for an X pipe.
