X pipe marking jig for tight 1D mandrel bends
A simple clamp-on jig for building an X pipe from two mandrel bends. It wraps round the bend and leaves an opening in a flat face across the outside of the curve. Scribe round the opening and the merge cut is marked, the same on both bends.
The flat is set one sixth of the tube diameter into each bend, so the pair overlap by a third of the diameter, which is the usual figure for an X pipe.
Which version do I need?
This jig is for 1D bends only, where the centreline radius equals the tube's outside diameter. For 1.5D and 2D bends you need the 1.5D / 2D jig. This jig only marks the merge. To cut your bends to angle first, use a mitre jig, or the 1D X pipe and mitre block, which does both jobs.
These blocks are sized for OD tube: mandrel bends sold by their outside diameter. They don't suit SCH10S weld elbows, which are made to a different bend radius.
How it works
- Fit the two halves round the bend. Magnets hold them together, and the jig takes bends with or without straight legs.
- The outside of the bend shows through the opening in the flat face. Scribe round the edge of the opening.
- Take the jig off and cut to the line. The cut is a flat one sixth of the tube diameter deep.
- Mark and cut the second bend the same way. The two flats sit face to face, ready to tack.
