Set the same tungsten stick-out every time. Rest the torch cup on the top edge over the slot you want, let the tungsten drop to the bottom of the slot, and tighten the back cap: the tungsten now sticks out of the cup by the depth marked under the slot.
What it does
11 slots: 2 to 10 mm in 1 mm steps, plus 12 and 15 mm, each marked with its depth
Every cup from a #4 up bridges the slots, and they take tungstens up to 3.2 mm

A cup number is its bore in sixteenths of an inch. The chart on the gauge gives the bore in millimetres:
