Notch marking sleeve for roll cage, chassis and frame tube

Mark a tight-fitting fishmouth notch without a notcher. Slide the sleeve onto the end of the tube, draw round its shaped end, cut to the line and the tube sits down snugly on the tube it joins. Each sleeve is made for your tube size and wall, the tube it joins onto and the angle between them, so the profile is right first time.

Which one do I need?

  • Your tube: the outside diameter and wall of the tube you are notching.
  • Joins onto: the tube it meets. That can be the same size or bigger, for example 1.5" onto 1.75".
  • Angle: the angle between the two tubes, where 90° is a square T joint. Choose a set of four (30°, 45°, 60° and 90°) or a single sleeve at any angle from 30° to 90° in 5° steps.
  • Not sure of the wall? Pick the thicker one. A sleeve made for a thicker wall still fits a thinner tube; the gap at the sides of the joint is just a little bigger.

The metric sizes are in our metric tube listing.

How it works

  1. Draw a line along the tube where you want the long point of the notch to be.
  2. Slide the sleeve onto the end of the tube. It springs tight. Line up the tallest groove at its base with your line.
  3. Set the length: the CL number on the sleeve is the distance from its bottom edge to where the two tubes' centre lines cross. Mark your centre-line length on the tube and set the bottom edge of the sleeve that far back from the mark.
  4. Draw round the shaped end, slide the sleeve off, cut just outside the line and grind back to it, keeping the cut square to the tube surface.
  5. Offer it up. The inside edge of the tube sits down on the other tube all the way round; the small V left on the outside is ready for the weld.

Why the wall thickness matters

On cage tube the wall is thick enough to change the notch. A line taken from the outside of the tube leaves the inside edge standing proud at the sides, so the tube won't sit down until you file it back. Our line follows the inside of the wall, so the joint seats straight off the grinder.

Lining up both ends

Each sleeve has four flat sides and 24 grooves round its base, every 15°. With a sleeve on each end of a tube, rest the flats on the bench to keep the two notches in line, or turn one sleeve a flat for notches at 90° to each other.
